Description
Never used an eSIM before? It is less complicated than a plastic SIM, but there are a few things worth knowing before you buy, and one of them catches people out every week.
WHAT AN eSIM ACTUALLY IS
A data plan that lives inside your phone, downloaded as a QR code. No plastic to swap, no shop to find, no tray pin. Your normal SIM stays where it is, so your own number keeps working for calls and texts.
HOW TO INSTALL IT (ABOUT FIVE MINUTES, BEFORE YOU FLY)
1. Buy a plan for your destination on our site. Pay by card or PayPal.
2. A QR code arrives by email, usually within minutes.
3. Connect to your home Wi-Fi. Open Settings, then Mobile or Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code.
4. Give it a name such as Travel data, so you can tell it apart from your home line.
5. Leave it switched off until you land.
WHEN YOU LAND
Turn the travel eSIM on and set it as the line for mobile data. Keep your normal SIM enabled for calls and SMS. Data starts at your first connection in the destination, not on the day you bought it.
THE PART THAT CATCHES PEOPLE OUT
This is a data-only eSIM. It has no phone number attached, so a bank code or an app that texts you to confirm a login will not reach it. That code still goes to your normal SIM, which is why you keep that one switched on.
Check your handset before paying as well: it needs an eSIM chip and must be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, Settings then General then About shows either Digital SIM or a second IMEI. Phones sold in mainland China, and iPhones bought in Hong Kong or Macau, usually do not have one. Wi-Fi-only iPads do not either.
Coverage is 200+ countries and regions on local 4G/5G partner networks. Single-country plans start at $1.10, and regional bundles cover Europe, USA & Canada, Asia-Pacific and more.
