Description

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) starts in the bone marrow, where the body makes blood cells. In ALL, young white blood cells called lymphoblasts keep multiplying instead of maturing, and they crowd out the normal cells that fight infection and carry oxygen. It is the most common cancer in children, but it also occurs in adults. Most cases arise from B-cells. The standard approach is chemotherapy given over several phases, and some patients go on to a stem cell transplant. For CD19-positive B-cell ALL that relapses, does not respond to treatment, or leaves behind minimal residual disease (MRD), haematologists may consider Blincyto (blinatumomab) from Amgen. This immunotherapy works by helping the patient's own T-cells find and destroy leukemia cells. Where a doctor prescribes it, Named Patient Program (NPP) can arrange a legal named patient import, which is how Blincyto is available in India.
